A character-based numerical rating system for evaluating the performance of sugarcane varieties is being proposed. The characteristics used are the ones normally used to evaluate sugarcane varieties in breeding programmes world over. The proposed system indicates the features of commercial importance associated with a variety, owes scope for accommodating emerging/newly identified varieties, variability, features, etc., that are lacking in the prevailing naming system of sugarcane varieties.
