Conservation Agriculture: A Sustainable Way Alternative for Maintaining Soil Resource Base

By Shilpa and Janardan Singh | 30-04-2021 | Page: 33-37

Abstract

Conventional tillage causes many problems such as resource depletion, erosion, soil compactness, environmental degradation, etc. for the ecosystem. The main reason for these problems is monocropping, which constitutes a continuous disturbance of soil structure, nutrients and microbial communities and make it weak and infertile for good support for the crop growth. It also requires high energy and cost input to make it sustainable for reuse. It is therefore necessary to select a tillage practice that strengthens the soil physical properties required for successful growth of agricultural crops. To overcome all these issues, conservation agriculture is an emerging practice for the sustainable maintenance of soil structure and biological properties. The practice focused mainly on at least 30% coverage of soil surface to conserve soil moisture, prevent erosion, suppress growth weeds, increase infiltration rate, etc. so that farmers would need not to burn the residue of the previous crops in the field.
