Abstract

Bamboos are perennial grasses adapted to diverse climates from tropical to temperate conditions. They are found commonly in the Indian subcontinent, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Bamboos are economically important worldwide and plays significant role in socio-economic status of the people engaged in its cultivation. Since bamboos are getting international recognition and acceptance for several economic uses and commercial exploration like engineered timber, construction materials, source of edible products and in  enriching the livelihood of indigenous people by means of handicrafts, the report of phytoplasma diseases on several different economically important bamboo species has a great epidemiological significance. Among different diseases reported on bamboo, phytoplasma diseases directly affect the marketability and quality attributes of the bamboo species like fibre integrity and reducing their contribution to international trade. An immediate attention is required towards planning management strategies to tackle the disease for better socio-economic exploitation of bamboos species.
