The Indian economy holds the fifth position in the world’s top economies. The majority of the country’s population relying on agriculture for their livelihoods. The role of agriculture remains paramount for achieving food security, income growth, and employment generation. Despite contributing 14 to 16 per cent to the GDP, the agricultural sector possesses immense untapped potential to play a pivotal role in propelling India toward a $5 trillion economy. The country has started working with a profitability-centric approach in the agricultural sector with systematic reforms to make the Indian agriculture sector more successful. Agricultural engineering, defined as the application of science and engineering in agriculture, aims to boost productivity and ensure the suitability of harvested biomass for consumption. Agricultural engineers are instrumental in the mechanization and modernization of agriculture, enhancing input efficiency, minimizing losses at various production stages, and alleviating human drudgery in agricultural operations. To meet the $5 trillion economy target, widespread adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as drones, artificial intelligence, precision farming, and block chain is imperative for the agricultural sector. The agricultural engineering also facilitates processing and value addition to agro-produce leading to quality production at competitive national and international markets. The sector’s evolution towards modernization and the integration of advanced technologies are crucial steps in realizing the full potential of agriculture in contributing to India’s best economic growth.
