Abstract

Fish is a rich source of protein, and is of great nutritional value. Women, particularly the pregnant women, require enough amount of protein besides several other nutritional requirements. Being easily digested and of great nutritional value, the disease-free fishes are considered to be an ideal protein source for pregnant women of all social segments. A large number of fishes have been reported to be parasitized by different aquatic fungi and bacteria from different parts of the world and the infection affects the protein content of fishes negatively. Out of three basic disease control methods, the first chemical control has been found to be highly risky for pregnant women for its "Boomerang Effect" due residual effect of chemicals; the second method of plant biochemicals has not been cost effective and needs frequent repetitions but, the third method of bioremediation and use of Perpetual Bioremediation System (PBS) has been highly effective and safe for consumption
by pregnant women.
